Overview

It is also called Stammering or childhood-onset fluency disorder. It involves frequent and significant problem with normal fluency and flow of speech. People who stutter know what they want to say, but have difficulty saying it.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting a word, phrase or sentence
  • Prolonging a word or sounds with a word
  • Repetition of a sound, syllable or word
  • Addition of extra words such as ‘umm’, ‘ah’
  • Excess tension, tightness of facial muscles
  • Anxiety about talking
  • Limited ability to effectively communicate
  • Rapid eye-blinks
  • Head jerks
  • Clenching fist
