Bariatric Surgery

Overview

This is a procedure done to obtain a small tissue from the liver so that it can be examined under the microscope for signs of disease and extent of damage. This is done under ultrasound guidance and a small needle is inserted in the liver to get the tissue specimen.

Why is liver biopsy done?

  1. Abnormal liver function tests which are not otherwise diagnosed.
  2. Staging of liver disease like in Hepatitis B and C
  3. To determine treatment plans for liver disease
  4. Fever of unknown origin
  5. Diagnosing liver diseases like autoimmune liver disease, Wilson’s disease , Hemochromatosis
