Endoscopic sclerotherapy

Overview

Patient’s undergo this procedure in an emergency setting of bleeding due to peptic ulcer or bleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus and stomach which are known as varices.

How is it done?

During an upper GI endoscopy procedure a needle is inserted into the bleeding site and a sclerosant solution is injected directly into the site with almost immediate control of bleeding. For variceal ligation, a set of bands are mounted on the endoscope and they are delivered directly to the enlarged veins of the food pipe and bleeding is controlled.
