Breast cancer is the 2nd most common Cancer worldwide and most common cancer in Indian women. Hereditary and genetic factors account for 5-10 % of Breast Cancer patients. While nonhereditary factors account for majority of patients. Certain risk factors that increase the risk of Breast cancer are Menstrual History (early age at menarche(< 12 y) and later age at menopause), Pregnancy (nulliparous women and late age at first birth after 35 y), exogenous hormone intake like oral contraceptive, Alcohol consumption, and obesity. Breastfeeding and physical activity are known protective factors.
In India, Oral cancer accounts for 30 % of all cancers. It is caused by modifiable risk factors like tobacco consumption in any form(cigarettes, beedi, chewing tobacco, Paan with areca nut (supari), Alcohol consumption , Sharp teeth or ill fitting dentures or Viral infections (HPV infection). While a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and green tea has been shown to be protective.
Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among Indian women. Causative risk factiors are HPV infection, multiple sexual partners, smoking and pre existing HIV infection. It can be prevented with safe sexual practices, HPV vaccination and timely detection with screening can cure this cancer.
Worldwide, it is the leading cause of cancer and cancer mortality. In India, It is the 2nd most common cancer in men. Rsk factors are Smoking, Asbestos exposure, Occupational hazards like exposure to Arsenic, chromium, silica, Nickle, Exposure to Radon gas and airpollution are implicated as causes of lung Cancer.
