Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Overview

The force produced by circulating blood on the walls of the body's arteries, which are the primary blood vessels, is known as blood pressure. When your blood pressure is too high, you have hypertension. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries is high enough to cause health problems such as heart disease.

Types of Hypertension: The amount of blood pumped by your heart and the resistance to blood flow in our arteries both influence blood pressure. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. The unit of measurement for blood pressure is millimetres of mercury (mm Hg). It is of two types:-

Systolic pressure - The first number, or upper number, represents the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.

  1. Diastolic pressure - The second, or lower, number represents the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats.

Hypertension Causes: - When there is no identifiable causes of hypertension, it is known as primary hypertension. It normally takes a long time to manifest itself. Many have high blood pressure as a result of a medical condition. Hypertension or High Blood Pressure can be caused by a variety of conditions and medications. These are mentioned below:-

  • Kidney disorder
  • Smoking
  • Genetics
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Age
  • Obese or overweight
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Inactive lifestyle

Hypertension Symptoms: - Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) is referred to as a "silent killer." Even when blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels, most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms.

Headaches, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds are common signs and symptoms of high blood pressure, but they aren't specific and usually don't emerge until the condition has developed to a severe or life-threatening level.

Hypertension Treatment: - A change in lifestyle can aid in the control and management of high blood pressure. These lifestyle changes may include the following:

  • Have less salt
  • Take alcohol in moderate amount
  • Quit Smoking
  • Quit consuming tobacco
  • Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.
  • Avoid foods high in saturated fats.
  • Do exercises daily
  • Sometimes your doctor may advise some medicines if your blood pressure is elevated
