Viral fever is a common illness that usually lasts 3 to 5 days. However, severe cases can take around a week or more. It affects almost all age groups and can cause discomfort, weakness, and high fever.

The fever can vary from 99°F to 103°F depending on the underlying virus. A body temperature of or above 100°F is a mild fever and a fever of or above 102°F is considered high. Often fever is accompanied by chills.

It is usually not life-threatening and subsides without leaving any complications. However, those with weakened immune systems like children and the elderly should be more cautious. They are at risk of severe complications if treatment is delayed.

So, if you or someone in your family has a fever above 102°F should visit a doctor immediately. Timely treatment can ease your symptoms early and prevent any complications.

Viral Fever and Its Symptoms

Viral fever can be caused by different viruses. It is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of a viral infection. When a virus enters the body, it multiplies to affect the body. In response, our immune system releases a substance called pyrogens that increases body temperature. This high temperature creates an unfavourable environment for the virus.

Based on the type of virus, the fever can be accompanied by other symptoms. Here are some common types of viruses along with their symptoms besides fever:

  • Respiratory virus (like Influenza virus, rhinovirus, hMPV, and coronavirus): Sore throat, weakness, cough, runny or stuffy nose, congestion and loss of smell or taste (in some cases).
  • Mosquito-borne virus (like Dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus): Rash, weakness, and joint or body pain
  • Gastrointestinal virus (like Rotavirus and Norovirus): Vomiting, weakness, and diarrhoea
  • Exanthematous virus (like Measles virus, chickenpox, and Rubella virus): Red or pink skin rash
  • Bloodborne virus (like Hepatitis virus and HIV): Liver inflammation or other severe symptoms

Complication of an Untreated Viral Infection

  • Excessive sweating due to high body temperature, diarrhoea, or vomiting can cause dehydration.
  • Risk of secondary infection due to weakened immunity.
  • Rarely, it affects organs like kidneys and the liver and causes neurological issues.

Treatment of a Viral Fever

Usually, doctors recommend a combination of medications like analgesics, decongestants, and antipyretics. Additionally, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep, and eating digestible and nutritious foods (like khichadi and daliya) can benefit you.
