Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is a condition that affects the man’s ability to get and keep an erection. Some men occasionally experience this condition, which can be normal. But if the problem becomes frequent and affects your sexual life, seek a doctor’s help.

Some men hesitate to talk about this as sex and sexual problems are still taboo in India. This problem of being not able to talk openly about erectile dysfunction (ED) impacts their psychology, well-being and sadly relationships as well.

Understanding the problem, its symptoms, causes and treatment can help you achieve a better sex life.

Symptoms

  • Low self-esteem
  • Reduced sex desire
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection for a longer period

Causes

Male sexual arousal is a complex process. During this process, the brain, nerves, blood vessels, hormones and muscles work together, which results in an erection. Sexual thoughts and direct contact with the penis usually stimulate this process.

Problems at any stage of this process can lead to erectile dysfunction. Stress and mental health concerns are believed to be the primary culprit for this condition.

Sometimes a combination of psychological and physical changes, having limited blood supply to the penis, damaged nerves, high cholesterol, obesity, sleep disorders, atherosclerosis (hardening or blocked arteries, high blood sugar, heart disease and some other physical problems could also lead to this problem. Tobacco, drug and alcohol abuse are also risk factors for this condition.

Moreover, with age, an erection might take longer or might not be as firm as it used to be. You may need more direct touch to the penis to get and keep an erection.

Complications

  • A feeling of being unfulfilled from sexual life
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Low self-esteem or embarrassment
  • Problems in relationship
  • Loss of intimacy with the partner
  • Problem getting a female partner pregnant

There are also some other sexual disorders associated with erectile dysfunction, like premature or delayed ejaculation and anorgasmia (an inability to achieve orgasm despite adequate stimulation).

Diagnosis

Erectile dysfunction diagnosis includes several tests, including a physical examination. The doctor may also ask you about your health and sexual history and may conduct some tests to determine if the problem is caused by any other underlying condition.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the underlying problem. Here are the available treatment options:

  • Medications

Your doctor may prescribe some medicines or injections to improve the blood flow to the penis and treat any other underlying condition.

  • Talk Therapy

Another great way to overcome this problem is talk therapy. This treatment option is useful for psychological problems. You can talk to a relationship counsellor. He or she will help you reconnect with your partner emotionally, which will help you.

  • Vacuum Pumps

Sometimes a vacuum pump is also suggested to get an erection. The device improves blood flow to the penis, leading to an erection.

  • Lifestyle Changes

Considering kegel exercises, yoga, aerobic exercises and a plant-based diet can also be beneficial.

Prevention

  • Exercise regularly
  • Limit or avoid alcohol
  • Refrain from smoking and drugs
  • Spend more quality time with your partner
  • Involve yourself in stress-relieving activities
  • Manage diabetes, heart disease or any other health conditions (if you’ve any)
