What is UTI?

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) rank amongst the world’s most common infections and approximately 8 million people are infected every year. These infections become more recurrent with age; they occur easier in women but men get them all the same. UTIs happen when bacteria infect the kidneys, bladder and tubes in the urinary tract. The upper urinary tract comprises of the kidneys and ureters while the lower tract holds the bladder and urethra. Over 50% of women face a lifetime risk of contracting UTIs and pregnant women are most vulnerable.

What are the Symptoms of UTI?

The most apparent symptoms include an incessant urge to repeatedly urinate accompanied by a burning sensation while urinating, dark or cloudy urine with a strong odour and pelvic pain.

What Causes UTI?

Some of the most common causes of contracting UTIs are poor personal and surrounding hygiene, repeated and frequent sexual intercourse with multiple partners, blocked urination, diabetes, involuntary urination, contraceptives, kidney stones, menopause, heavy antibiotic use, weak immune system, dehydration, pregnancy etc.

What Prevents UTI?

Prevention is the only cure to UTIs. Keeping hydrated is one place to begin as it helps in frequent urination and cleansing out infections. Hydration and its link to UTIs rest in the higher occurrence of UTIs in those who urinate less frequently. Alcohol and coffee should be avoided as they cause dehydration and irritate the bladder, urinating and washing up after intercourse to keep the genitalia clean, cotton undergarments should be used to keep the area clean, toilet seats should be sanitised, sanitary pads over tampons etc. Some studies have shown vitamin C to be an effective means of prevention as it increases the acidity of the urine which in turn kills bacteria. Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C should be consumed; cranberries are an excellent source along with kiwis, oranges, lemons, grapefruit. Cranberry juice should be consumed regularly as it prevents the bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract.

What is the Treatment for UTI?
