The news of pregnancy is an unexplainable feeling for every mom. During this phase mother and baby undergo several changes. That’s why it’s important to care for your body and its nourishment. Here’re some nutrients which you should definitely include in your diet during pregnancy.

Protein

It is considered the building block of the body and is found in every cell. Protein helps in the cell and tissue development of the baby. At the same time, it also develops and repairs uterine and breast tissue. 

Protein also helps in the synthesis of hormones, enzymes and antibodies. Apart from this, it aids in transporting oxygen in the blood. A Woman needs at least 51 gm of protien during pregnancy. A good thumb rule is to include a portion of protein at every meal. 

Iron

Iron is an essential nutrient for making haemoglobin in both babies and mothers.  Haemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that brings oxygen to the tissue. It is also crucial for the baby’s brain development. The baby also stores some part of iron, so that he/she can use it even after birth. It is found in all greens, beets, lentils, green peas etc. 

DHA

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the essential fat-building block and it aids in foetal growth and development. Research shows that taking adequate DHA may reduce the risk of preterm birth and improves depressive moods.  

DHA also ensures healthy birth weight. This essential nutrient also helps in the development of the eyes and nervous system in the baby.

Vitamin C

It is considered a very important vitamin for overall health. It is a powerhouse of antioxidants that makes it very crucial for both mother and baby. You need it for tissue healing and wound repair. And simultaneously it helps in the baby’s bone and teeth development. Vitamin C also has a role in improving immunity, iron absorption and collagen production. 

Folic Acid

It is called pregnancy superhero and is usually prescribed to almost every pregnant woman. Taking folic acid reduces the risk of several birth defects. Folic acid also aids in the production of blood cells. Commonly found in leafy veggies, citrus fruits, eggs etc.    

Calcium

This nutrient is critical for the baby’s rapidly growing bones, teeth and muscles. Calcium also aids in the baby’s heart and nerve proper functioning. This nutrient is also needed for fluid control.

Iodine

It is an important nutrient for the baby’s brain, skeletal and nervous system development. Getting enough iodine maintains the normal functioning of the thyroid in the mother and ensures the healthy and normal development of the thyroid in the baby. 

The thyroid regulates the hormones that control the heart rate, body temperature, metabolism and some other core functions of the body.
