What Is the Link Between Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer? - Aakash Healthcare

Vitamin D is often associated with bone health. But some studies also reveal its link with colorectal cancer. Yes, you read right. Experts believe that higher vitamin D levels can cut the risk of colorectal cancer by around 60%, as this vitamin slows down uncontrolled cell growth and prevents tumour development. Let’s understand this in more detail.

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, is characterised by the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in a part of the large intestine, specifically the colon. The colon is the first and longest part of the large intestine.

This is the area where food is broken down for the body to use. They usually start as polyps (small clumps of cells) in the colon. These polyps are not always cancerous, but sometimes they turn into colon cancer over time.

This cancer is the fourth most common cancer in India in both genders. It usually affects older age groups. However, recently, there has been a surge in cases among the young population.

Its common risk factors include high consumption of red and processed meat, smoking and alcohol, lifestyle disorders, family history, and genetic factors.

Understanding of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium for bones. Moreover, this sunshine vitamin also plays an important role in supporting the immune system and the functioning of muscle and brain cells.

However, this vitamin is usually not found in many foods. You can get it from sunlight exposure, fortified foods, and supplements. Thus, how much vitamin D your body makes depends on sun exposure, dietary habits, skin tone, etc.

Although India has an ample amount of sunlight, one in five Indians is vitamin D-deficient. There are many reasons to blame. That’s a major concern for all of us. Deficiency of this essential vitamin in a significant population is an alarming stage.

The Link Between Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer

As discussed earlier, some studies show a link between vitamin D and colorectal cancer. That’s because of vitamin D’s ability to slow down uncontrolled cell growth, block the formation of blood vessels that nourish tumours, and encourage the death of abnormal cells.

The studies further reveal that people with a lower level of vitamin D are at a higher risk of developing cancer. Contrarily, people with higher vitamin intake were found to be 58% less likely to develop colon cancer.

However, these studies don’t showcase the exact biological process behind these aspects of vitamin D. Thus, it may require more large-scale studies to conclude.

What’s Next?

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for the body. It supports many functions of the body. Some studies also reveal its link with colorectal cancer. However, strong evidence is required to reach any conclusion.

Still, you need to be more aware of your vitamin D intake to ensure your overall health. For that matter, consult a doctor for a vitamin D level checkup. Additionally, it is a good idea to consider regular health checkups for early diagnosis of any disease.
