Blood pressure (BP) is one of the most important parameters of our overall health. Still, many of us hardly pay attention to it. And many don’t even know what the normal range is.

This blog will help you with this, so you can take proactive steps to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. So, let’s get started.

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the pressure of circulating blood against the walls of arteries as the heart pumps blood throughout the body. It's recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure (when the heart beats) and diastolic pressure (when the heart rests between beats). Each time the heart beats, the blood flows to the arteries. Usually, the heart beats 60 to 100 times a minute to deliver all the key nutrients and supplies to your whole body.

Normal Blood Pressure

According to the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure is typically defined as:

  • Systolic: Less than 120 mmHg
  • Diastolic: Less than 80 mmHg

That means the average blood pressure for adults is 120/80 mmHg.

Abnormal Blood Pressure

  • Elevated: 120-129/ <80 mmHg
  • Hypertension stage 1: 130-139/80-89 mmHg
  • Hypertension stage 2: ≥ 140/≥90 mmHg
  • Hypertensive crisis: >180/>120 mmHg

Factors Affecting Blood Pressure

Several factors can influence blood pressure, including:

  • Genetics
  • Diet (sodium, potassium, and calcium intake)
  • Physical activity level
  • Weight
  • Stress
  • Sleep quality
  • Certain medical conditions (e.g., kidney disease, sleep apnea)

Tips to Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
  • Engage in regular physical activity (at least 150 minutes/week)
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques (e.g., meditation, deep breathing)
  • Limit sodium intake and stay hydrated
  • Get regular blood pressure checks
  • Consult a doctor whenever your blood pressure reading is beyond a normal range
