As our lifestyle is becoming poorer so is our health. Kidney disease is one such problem that is rising exponentially. A report shows that around 10% of the global population is affected by CKD (chronic kidney disease). India is no exception with almost similar stats. Every year over a lakh renal failures are reported in the nation.

Recognising the increasing global burden of kidney diseases, the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) initiated a campaign called World Kidney Day (WKD).

WKD is a global campaign to raise awareness about the importance of good kidney health. The campaign also works to reduce the impact of kidney diseases worldwide.

World Kidney Day is observed on the 2nd Thursday of March every year. This year it falls on 14th March 2024. The day serves as a platform to educate people about the risk factors for kidney disease and promote preventive measures to maintain healthy kidneys.

What happens on this day?
The day is acknowledged by several healthcare intuitions, NGOs, medical groups and government bodies. Together, they raise awareness about kidney health and various associated diseases and circulate preventive tips. They make people aware of the importance of systematic screening for all types of kidney diseases, especially those with lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension. People from various foundations also advocate for equitable, and accessible care.

Theme 2024
The theme for World Kidney Day 2024 is "Kidney Health for All - Advancing Equitable Access to Care & Optimal Medication Practise.” The theme focuses on the importance of ensuring equitable access to kidney healthcare services irrespective of the socio-economic status or geographical location of the people. The emphasis is on bridging the gap in kidney care and promoting universal access to quality kidney health services.

History of World Kidney Day
WKD was first observed in 2006. Since then, the campaign has never stopped. Every year, the campaign highlights a particular theme.

Lifestyle Changes to Improve Kidney Health
With some little modifications in our lifestyle, we can care for our kidney health. Here’s how you can do it:

Maintain a healthy diet
First thing first, it’s important to load up your plate with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. It will be good if you cut down on sodium, processed foods and sugar intake.

Drink an ample amount of water
Water and kidneys are best friends forever. Drinking an adequate amount of water every day flushes out toxins and waste products. The recommended daily intake for men is 3.7 litres and 2.7 litres for men.

Exercise regularly
The second thing that will help you promote your kidney health is regular exercise. It will help maintain a healthy weight, reduce blood pressure and even improve heart health. These all are beneficial for kidney health.

Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption
Smoking and alcohol are risk factors for numerous kidney diseases. Quitting smoking and moderating alcohol consumption will help you out.

Monitor blood sugar levels and blood pressure
Excess levels of these vital parameters are the leading causes of kidney disease. Regular monitoring and management of BP and sugar are very helpful.
