WHY DO I NEED THIS PROCEDURE?

Valve surgery is required whenever any of the valve(s) function is impaired to the extent that it cannot be managed by medication and it is done under full general anesthesia.

HOW WILL IT BE PERFORMED?

Routine valve surgery is done through the midline incision over the chest but in Some cases it can be done by small incision on the side of the chest. Medication is used temporarily to stop your heart. Your blood will be re-routed to a heart-lung (bypass) machine. This will take over from your heart and lungs, and will add oxygen to your blood and maintain your circulation. The diseased valve will then be replaced or repaired by heart valve replacement surgery. Two types of Artificial Valves are used for replacement one is Tissue Valve and another is Metallic Valve. Patients with metallic valves need to be on blood thinner medication.

HOW WILL IT BENEFIT ME?

Surgery can treat heart valve disease by replacement or repairing a diseased or abnormal valve and can eliminate, or improve your symptoms and heart valve replacement treatment may prevent permanent damage to your heart and it prolongs the survival and gives good quality of life.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NON TREATMENT?

Non treatment could lead to end stage heart failure and life threatening complications and death. Non compliance to the medication in terms of blood thinner may lead to mechanical valve dysfunction.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE?

Usually other options are ruled out if valve surgery is needed it is the only option.
