While considering health, screening at any age is a wise decision, it becomes more necessary when you hit the 40s, as this is the time when genetic makeup changes and lifestyle stress starts putting weight on overall health.

This is where an active and periodic health screening can help you. Although there are several health tests, some are very important, which have been listed below...

Osteoarthritis

Age is a high-risk factor for osteoarthritis as after the 40s, the Vitamin D level and calcium absorption capability of the body becomes low. Osteoarthritis is one of the common diseases which has affected millions of people aged more than 40. It is a form of arthritis that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down. This disease mostly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine. So, taking care of your Vitamin D and calcium intake and undergoing periodic osteoarthritis screening can help you in preventing this disease.

Cancer

The risk of cancer increases with age, from fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 people in the under-20 age group to 350 cases per 100,000 people in the 45 to 49 age group. The incident rate increases to 1,000 per 100,000 people after the age of 60. There are some cancers that are more prevalent at this age. Men should consider periodic screening for prostate and colorectal cancer. On the other hand, women should get themselves screened for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer. If you notice symptoms of any other cancer, discuss it with your doctor.

Diabetes

It is a common disease that usually affects those in their mid-30s and early 40s. Being obese and having a family history of diabetes raise your risk of getting this disease. So, if you fall in the risk category, regularly check your blood sugar level, adopt a healthy lifestyle and take adequate steps to get in good shape.

Cholesterol

As you age, the body’s metabolism changes and the liver doesn’t remove the bad cholesterol as effectively as it did when you were younger. This leads to high cholesterol levels and raises the risk of heart attack or stroke. Heart ailments are one of the leading causes of death in India. So, getting a periodic health checkup will help you detect abnormal cholesterol levels at an earlier stage.

Dental & Eye

After hitting 40, many dental problems start. Gum problems, oral cancer, cavities, breakdown of dental fillings, sensitive teeth and dry mouth-like problems start occurring, which affect many aspects of life. Talk to your dentist if you experience such problems and ask them what steps you should take to prevent further problems. Also, schedule dental cleanings and exams every six months and brush your teeth at least twice daily.

Ageing can also affect your eyes. If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, take an appointment with an ophthalmologist at least every two years to be updated about your eye health.

Blood Pressure

A study reveals that the blood pressure of a person changes in early adulthood and midlife. High blood pressure is a risk factor for stroke, cardiovascular disease and kidney. To prevent these conditions, start monitoring your blood pressure in your early 40s. If you find an abnormal blood pressure level, consult your doctor to know the underlying causes.

Hearing

Healing loss with age is called presbycusis which has affected millions of lives across the globe. The problems usually occur due to loss or damage to some of the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. A study shows that many adults start losing hearing capabilities in their 40s. So, keeping a tab on your hearing health in your 40s can protect you from presbycusis.

Nutrition Counseling & Exercise

The small, consistent choices we make related to food, movement and overall well-being in our daily life go a long way in supporting our health. Most adults start experiencing problems in their 40s which are somehow linked to their lifestyle choices. Optimising your lifestyle is the key to maintaining good health. Ask a health coach or doctor to create a diet and exercise plan for you.

Health checks are an opportunity to take control of your health and overall well-being. So, book an appointment with a doctor for a health screening.
