A sign of breast lumps can send shivers down your spine because of the fear of cancer. But note that 80% to 85% are benign (non-cancerous). However, some can indicate serious problems. So, if you are experiencing such a problem, don’t ignore it and seek medical help. In this guide, we will look at the signs when you should worry about it and take proactive actions against it.

What are breast lumps?

Breast lumps are the growth or mass that develops in the breast or near the armpit area. Lumps can be pea-size, smaller than it or even several inches. They can feel soft and spongy as a grape or hard as a rock. They could also be:

  • Bumpy
  • Moveable (roll between the fingers)
  • Round or irregularly shaped

When to worry?

  • Abnormal lumps: Lumps that feel different from the rest of your breast tissue and are not subsiding with time.
  • Pain in lumps: Lumps that cause pain should also raise a red flag. However, keep in mind that pain is not always an indicator of breast cancer; benign conditions are often more painful than cancerous ones.
  • Changes in shape or shape: Any noticeable change in the size or shape of your breast, accompanied by a lump.

Causes

  • Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that can form when fluid accumulates in the milk ducts.
  • Fibrocystic changes: These are benign changes in the breast tissue that can cause lumps or thickening.
  • Fibroadenomas: These are solid, non-cancerous tumours that are commonly found in younger women aged between 14 and 35 years.
  • Phyllodes tumours: These are rare tumours that can be either benign or malignant. They begin in the connective tissues of the breast.
  • Breast infections: Infections, such as mastitis can cause lumps and inflammation in the breast tissue.
  • Breast cancer: While most breast lumps are benign, some can be cancerous. It's important to get any concerning lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out the possibility of breast cancer.

Diagnosis

If you are feeling anything abnormal with your breasts, seek medical assistance. Your doctor will ask you about symptoms and family history of breast cancer. The doctor may also evaluate the breasts. If they find unusual signs, you’ll be recommended for a few tests like:

  • Ultrasound: It is an imaging test that sends sound waves to breasts. This will picture the insights of the breasts in a comprehensive monitor. Through the insights, the doctor will identify whether the lump is cancerous.
  • Mammogram: It is an X-ray of the breast. During the test, you need to put the breasts on a plastic plate attached to the mammogram machine. Then, another plate will firmly press the breast from above till the X-ray is being taken.
  • Fine needle aspiration (FNA): It is a type of biopsy done through a small 21 to 25-gauge needle to take samples of breast tissue, which will be checked for cancer cells.

You may also be suggested for some other tests as well based on your symptoms and reports of the above-mentioned medical tests.

Early detection is key!

Early detection of breast cancer significantly improves the chances of successful treatment. While most breast lumps are benign, it's crucial not to delay seeking medical advice when something doesn't feel right. Regular breast self-exams and annual clinical breast exams can help you stay aware of any changes in your breasts.

Wrapping it up!

Remember not all breast lumps are serious, but some certainly can be. Knowledge, awareness, and prompt action are your best allies in managing your breast health. Ask your doctor how you can take care of the breasts and what to do if you notice any abnormal signs. Breast health is of paramount importance for women for overall health. So, stay informed, stay vigilant, and take action when needed!
