As technology advances, so does the world of Laser Vision Surgery. One of the most significant breakthroughs in recent years has been the advent of SMILE surgery, which stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. This minimally invasive procedure has gained popularity as an effective treatment for refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. However, despite its success and widespread adoption, several myths and misconceptions still persist regarding SMILE surgery. In this article, we aim to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding this revolutionary procedure and provide you with accurate information.

Myth 1: SMILE surgery is painful and involves a long recovery time.

Fact: One of the most prevailing myths about SMILE surgery is that it is a painful procedure and requires an extended recovery period. However, this is far from the truth. SMILE surgery is known for its minimally invasive nature, which involves creating a small incision through which the surgeon removes a tiny piece of corneal tissue to correct the refractive error. This results in almost no discomfort during the procedure, and patients typically experience only mild discomfort for a short period afterward. Most patients report a quick recovery, with their vision stabilizing by the next few days, allowing them to return to their regular activities without significant downtime. In my experience, most patients have 6/6 (normal vision) or 6/5 from the next day after the procedure.

Myth 2: SMILE surgery carries a higher risk of complications compared to other laser eye surgeries.

Fact: Another common myth surrounding SMILE surgery is that it carries a higher risk of complications compared to other laser eye surgeries such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) or PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). However, multiple studies have shown that SMILE surgery is as safe and effective as these traditional procedures, if not more so. The small incision made in SMILE surgery reduces the risk of complications like corneal flap-related issues, which can occur in LASIK. Additionally, SMILE surgery preserves more corneal biomechanical strength than LASIK, reducing the risk of certain long-term complications. Being a flapless procedure, it makes it safer in future even if there is a direct injury to the eye.'

Myth 3: SMILE surgery is only suitable for low myopia.

Fact: There is a misconception that SMILE surgery is only suitable for individuals with low levels of myopia. However, SMILE surgery has evolved since its inception and can now effectively treat a wide range of refractive errors. It has been approved to correct myopia ranging from -1.00 to -10.00 diopters, with astigmatism up to -5.00 diopters. This broader range of treatable refractive errors makes SMILE surgery a viable option for many individuals seeking visual correction.

Myth 4: Glasses will be required again after some time. Touch up laser is not possible with SMILE.

Fact: Some individuals fear that they will require glasses again after SMILE surgery. In our experience, 97% of patients have better than normal vision after surgery and the remaining 3% have a power of 0.25 to 0.50 for which they do not need glasses most of the time. What is remarkable, is the stability of the procedure which surpasses even LASIK. Regression of power does not occur after SMILE. However, some patients power is not stable and any changes in vision can still be addressed through further corrective procedures if necessary. Enhancements or touch-up procedures can be performed by the circle laser procedure, if the initial correction is not sufficient or if changes in vision occur over time.

Takeaway!

SMILE surgery has revolutionized the field of refractive surgery, providing a safe, effective, and minimally invasive solution for myopia and astigmatism correction. Debunking the common myths surrounding this procedure is essential to ensure individuals have accurate information when considering their vision correction options.
