From “Beti padhao, beti bachao” to women leading the nation, India has taken a significant leap in providing equal opportunities. Yet, one critical aspect of women’s lives is still unaddressed. That is their health.

Women are prone to many health problems at different stages of their lives, right from puberty, menstruation, and breast development to pregnancy and menopause. These health problems influence their overall health.

For that reason, regular gynaecological checkups are critical. After puberty, a female should consider an annual gynaecological checkup or as suggested by their gynaecologist.

Why Are Gynecological Check-ups Important?

Gynaecological health checkups are way more important than we often think. Here are some benefits of considering it:

  • Preventive Care: Regular check-ups help you keep track of your health and identify any changes that may indicate a potential complication. This can include screenings for cervical cancer, breast exams, and STI (Sexually transmitted infection) testing. Cervical cancer vaccine is an important part of preventive care
  • Early Detection and Treatment: As regular checkups allow you to diagnose a problem early on like cervical cancer, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you’ll have more treatment options and chances of better outcomes.
  • Reproductive Health: Regular check-ups offer you an opportunity to discuss any reproductive problem you are facing like changes in the menstruation cycle, sexual problems, birth control pills, fertility issues, and preconceptional counselling.
  • Mental Health: An annual check-up can also provide a safe and better space to discuss mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or postpartum depression, with your doctor.

What to Expect During a Gynecological Check-up?

A typical gynaecological check-up includes:

  • Medical History: Your medical history plays a critical role in your overall health. Your doctor will ask you a few questions regarding your health and previous health problems to review your medical history.
  • Discussion and Guidance: Your gynaecologist will discuss any concerns or issues based on your genetic factors, medical history or family history and will provide you with guidance on preventive care, including vaccination.
  • Physical Exam: You will be advised of some physical exams to check for any abnormality like a breast exam, abdominal exam, and pelvic exam.
  • Screenings and Tests: Depending on your age and health status, you may be suggested for a few screenings, such as a Pap smear, STI testing, or a mammogram, USG pelvis depending upon the symptoms.
