Although the number of dengue cases is slightly lower this year compared to last year, concerns over dengue have not subsided. Due to poor hygiene, limited awareness, and inadequate access to quality care, certain areas in India remain at risk. But the good news is that treatment facilities have improved, and so has the recovery.

But how long does dengue recovery take is still a question for many. This guide will discuss the recovery period in detail and help you determine whether your recovery is going in the right direction. So, without any ado, let’s start!

Understanding Dengue

Dengue, also known as breakbone fever, is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV). This virus is transmitted in humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. This problem is more common in tropical and subtropical regions than in temperate regions.

Those who experience symptoms develop symptoms after 3-14 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito, and this infection lasts for 7-10 days. The time period depends on the person’s physical status and immunity. These people usually report:

  • High fever (104°F)
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Swollen glands
  • Rash
  • Dehydration and less urination

People who get dengue for the second time are at greater risk of severe dengue, which is a very serious condition, even fatal. In severe dengue, patients may experience the following symptoms after the fever has gone away:

  • Severe stomach pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Rapid breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Bleeding gums or nose
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Pale and cold skin
  • Thirsty
  • Weakness

Depending on the symptoms, most people with mild dengue get relief by taking prescribed medicines, hydration, and proper care at home. Severe cases need admission to the hospital for monitoring and treatment.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Dengue?

It generally takes around 7 to 10 days after the appearance of symptoms to recover from dengue. This time is generally categorised into three stages, which are as follows:

  • Stage 1: This stage is also called the fever stage, and it usually lasts for 3 days, sometimes up to 7 days. In this stage, people usually experience symptoms mentioned above.
  • Stage 2: This is a critical phase, and it usually lasts for 3-4 days and happens on the 4th or 7th day of fever. The severity can vary from person to person. Some people complain of mild or no fever, experience red spots under the skin, or bleeding in the urine, nose, and gums. Sometimes internal bleeding also happens and causes serious complications if not addressed properly and timely.
  • Stage 3: This is a recovery stage. It usually starts after 1-2 days of the critical phase and lasts for 2-3 days. The patient starts feeling normal again with improved appetite.

Signs You Are Recovering from Dengue Fever

Most people think that if the fever is gone, the disease is gone. But that is wrong. After the fever, the most critical phase of dengue starts. That means a patient has to pass through all three stages to recover completely.

Here are some signs that you are in the recovery phase and soon get well soon:

  • Better energy level
  • Improved appetite
  • Improvement in frequency of urination
  • No new rash on the skin
  • Relief from severe symptoms

Management and Treatment

Dengue is a viral condition that requires medical attention, even if there are no or mild symptoms. Along with following your doctor’s advice, take enough rest and plenty of liquids to stay hydrated. If symptoms worsen, visit your nearby hospital immediately.
