The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has once again raised concerns across the nation. States like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have seen a noticeable spike in the last few weeks. This rise is attributed to sub-variants and waning immunity. Not only India, but other Asian countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are also seeing an uptick in cases.
With over 250 active cases as of 24th May 2025, authorities have once again come into action mode. Does it mean that we have to go back to the lockdown period? Does it mean that we have to see the horrible news or get cautious? There are a lot of such questions that might be brewing in your mind. This guide will answer them one by one.
Why is COVID-19 rising again?
The recent rise in COVID-19 cases is attributed to the heightened transmissibility of emerging sub-variants. While most individuals are immune to COVID-19, the Omicron subvariants, such as JN.1, can still affect people. Some experts even believe that protection from those immunity vaccines is diminishing over time.
What is the JN.1 variant?
This subvariant is believed to be a significant contributor to rising cases. It was first reported in the US in September 2023. Since then, it has been found in India, the UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong. It is believed to be a descendant of BA.2.86. (an Omicron subvariant). Experts believe that due to a higher chance of mutations, the JN.1 has higher transmissibility and immune escape potential. But the good news is that WHO (World Health Organisation) has classified it as “Variant of interest “, not “Variant of concern”.
What are the common symptoms of the JN.1 variant?
Do you need to worry?
Doctors from across the nation believe that the recent rise in COVID-19 is not a significant concern or a topic of worry. However, taking precautionary measures is always a good option.
Though a few hundred cases have been reported in a few parts of the country before the last week of May 2025, the situation in India still remains stable. That’s because most cases are mild and don’t need hospitalisation.
Doctors and authorities have also assured that there’s no need to panic. However, readiness and being aware of the symptoms can be helpful to you and your family.
Should you get the booster dose?
However, most of us have received two jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine. But still, a sizable population hasn’t received the booster dose. Experts believe that a booster dose has the capability of targeting Omicron-related variants of the COVID-19 virus. It not only boosts immunity but also reduces the chances of hospitalisation, severe complications, and death.
So, if you have not received the booster dose, talk to a doctor about when you should get it. Getting a booster dose can boost your waning immunity.
As per a few studies, updated monovalent vaccines targeting the JN.1 variant are also effective against new sub-variants LF.7 and NB.1.8 (Found in Singapore and Hong Kong).
How to stay safe?
To protect yourself and your loved ones, prevention is paramount:
Don’t panic, stay vigilant, stay safe, and get help when needed!
