What’s the role of antioxidants in skin and hair care?
Antioxidants are the guardians of skin and hair health. They protect us against free radicals, which are unstable molecules that have lost an electron due to body processes like metabolism or external factors like smoking, pollution and lifestyle.

When there is an imbalance between the body’s ability to produce free radicals and neutralise them, oxidative stress occurs. This makes the free radicals steal electrons from the healthy molecules of the body. Thus, causing harm to the body cells and accelerating the ageing process.

That’s where antioxidants come into play.

‘Anti’ means against and ‘oxidants’ means oxidising agent.

They are the molecules that help neutralise free radicals by donating electrons. Thus, preventing or postponing the oxidation of cells.

There are two types of antioxidants: exogenous (antioxidants from outside the body) and endogenous (antioxidants that form inside the body).

They can be found in various forms. These include minerals (such as selenium and zinc), vitamins (like vitamins C and E) and plant-derived compounds (such as polyphenols and flavonoids). Each antioxidant has a different role in supporting the skin, hair and overall health.

Here are some benefits of antioxidants for skin and hair
Protection from environmental damage
Antioxidants work like a guard to protect the skin and hair from harmful environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution. These stressors, otherwise, can cause premature ageing, dryness and pigmentation.

Prevent premature ageing
Oxidative stress can lead to the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots on the skin. Incorporating an adequate amount of antioxidants into your routine can promote collagen production. This will improve the skin elasticity to make the skin smooth, supple and healthy.

Hydration and nourishment
Antioxidants also have a role in nourishing and hydrating the skin and hair. Thus, making the skin healthy, radiant, and rejuvenated.

Combat inflammation
Antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties. This helps soothe irritated skin and scalp conditions like psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.

How to involve antioxidants in your routine?
Eat a diet rich in antioxidants
It’s best to include fruits, vegetables, seeds, whole grains and nuts in your diet as they are a rich source of antioxidants.

Use antioxidant-rich skincare products
Whatever skin products you use, be it serums, moisturisers and masks, check their labels. Prefer products with ingredients like vitamin C, resveratrol or green tea extracts.

Apply antioxidant oils
Nurture your hair and skin with oils like argan oil, rosehip oil, or grapeseed oil.

Consider supplements
If you are experiencing any skin or hair problems due to low levels of antioxidants, the doctor may prescribe you antioxidant supplements such as vitamin E or selenium.

With this, you can protect your skin against damage, maintain a youthful appearance, and promote overall health.
